Winiary's Roladki Schabowe

Last time i went to Tesco, they had a small TV screen set up in one of their sections. [FINALLY some technology!!] Anyways, it was a commercial for one of their powder sauces... and i actually found it on Youtube!

It looked simple enough so i decided to give it a try.
I didnt think much about it cuz afterall, TV commercials always exaggerate and make their products look 10x better and easier than it actually is. But after spending just 10 minutes preparing and leaving it in the oven for an hour... o wow, i must say this commercial was actually telling the truth. The ingredients and instructions are printed on the package but here is my version:

Winiary Roladki Schabowe w Sosie Pomidorowym
INGREDIENTS
  • 1 package of Winiary Roladki Schabowe w Sosie Pomidorowym
  • 1 C (250mL) Cold Water
  • 400g Pork chops without bones.
  • 4 slices of Ham
  • 6 slices of Cheese
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Place the meat between sheets of plastic wrap and pound until thin.
(you can also season your meat with salt & pepper...or other spices at this time)
  2. Place the Cheese and Ham over the meat and roll it up.
  3. Place your Rolls in a baking dish... seam-side down.
  4. Make the Sauce by adding your powder to water.
  5. Dissolve your powder first since it might clog up if you add directly to hot water.
  6. Heat your sauce mixture until it becomes thick.
  7. Pour sauce over your Rolls and Bake for 45 minutes or until the meat is done.
  8. When the meat seems done, take it out and place some more cheese over your rolls and let it bake another 10-15 minutes (so your cheese wont burn during the 45 minutes of baking).

I used Chicken Breasts instead of pork chops and it still turned out GREAT!

They actually made another commercial for the White Cheese sauce... 真有心啊

For the White sauce, the ingredients and instructions are the same, except you need to add 12% Cream to it. I actually liked the white one better than the Red one. 還可以加在義大利麵上,一包兩吃喔!

Back with Empanadas

Oh my... it's been a while since i came here. almost a year? Eeeeek.

The sad part is, i only thought of updating this cuz it's easter weekend and my 6 day long weekend is starting to feel like forever (hmm... im gonna regret i said that). But anyhoo, things are still the same... still trying to pass my classes, and still counting down the years till i finish school.

It's been...what, 7 years since i left Paraguay? and people still ask me if i miss it there. Hmmm... that's a hard question. Afterall, it is a 3rd world country... so dont expect me to go crazy and go on-and-on about how it's the best place in the world (i'm being honest here). But it's not as bad as people think it is. You really have to live there to understand. Even now when i ask my mom whether she prefers Taiwan or Paraguay... she'd always reply Paraguay. I miss a lot of things about Paraguay... the slow-paced lifestyle, friends and family, close-knit communities, big houses...etc. But most importantly, i miss the FOOD!

I think the only thing that would make me wanna fly back right NOW is ASADO! Bascially it's just a barbeque... with magical powers. hahahaha, no but seriously, no barbeque I have ever tasted has been as good as the ones in Paraguay.

If you ever decide to visit paraguay... I say, you can skip all the sightseeing... one meal of Paraguayan asado will make your trip worthwhile...SERIOUSLY!

Since I don't have a huge ass grill or access to super-duper-incredibly good Paraguayan meat, the next thing i could think about making were Empanadas. What are Empanadas? 簡單的說, it's a big, fried (or baked) 水餃. Empanadas aren't really from Paraguay... you see them in tons of spanish-influenced/latin american countries. They come in many different flavors... but my favorite were the beef, corn, and ham+cheese.
I went to PP on thursday to stock up my fridge since everything would be closed during Easter. That place was packed! I was lucky to have found some ground beef lying around. So okay, like a normal 水餃, you have to make the dough + filling. Here you go:

Empanada Dough:
INGREDIENTS
  • 2 C Flour
  • 1/3 C Lard
  • 2 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Warm Water

DIRECTIONS

  • Mix together the Flour + Salt + Baking Powder.
  • Cut in the Lard and pinch it with your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs (like making a pie).
  • Add in warm water until it the dough comes together.
  • Knead until it forms a smooth ball.
  • Cut the dough into 12 pieces.
  • Roll the individual pieces out and cut into 12cm circles.
  • Make more with leftover dough.

Empanada de Carne (beef) Filling:

INGREDIENTS

  • 0.5 kg Ground Beef
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Green bell peper
  • 2 cloves of Garlic
  • Parsley
  • Cumin
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • 2-3 Hard boiled Eggs

DIRECTIONS

  • Cook meat with onions, green pepper, garlic.
  • Add Parsley + Cumin (i use a lot of both...especially Cumin!)
  • Season with Salt + Pepper.
  • When done, chop the eggs up and gently mix it into the meat.
  • Spoon the meat mixture onto the dough and fold it up.
  • Deep fry until golden brown / bake them. (when baking, brush the top with eggs.)

Strawberry Marble Muffins

Niieeeehhhh. forget the last post, i still went back to the kitchen afterall. But i will keep this short and hopefully go back to study soon.

I used to make muffins like... every other day until i got sick of baking the same flavors all the time (Coffee Chocolate Coco, Blueberry, and Apple Cinnamon). They're good, but you just dont get any satisfaction making the same things over and over again. I had plans to study last night, i really did, but 手太閒 and............ out came my first strawberry marble muffins! It was worth giving up my precious study time. XD

Strawberry Marble Muffins

  • Make 2 batters of normal muffin mix.

  • Add strawberry gelatin to one of them and mix well.

  • Spoon the white batter and the pink batter into your muffin wells side-by-side.

  • Use a knife and cut through the batter to mix the colors.

  • Bake for 20 minutes.

  • For other variations, use different flavored jello.

蔥油餅 (Geen Onion Pancake)

I was supposed to START studying for my Physiology NBME today... but i woke up too late (1:00pm), 混 too much with Mr.Lo, made 蔥油餅, ate my strawberry pie, and... slept from 8 to 11pm. AHHHHHHHH. aiiiiii... im so lazy.

This is the 2nd time i made it. The first time was when i had extra dough left from our Curry Dumplings.. we just added some spring onions on and tah-dahh! out came a 蔥油餅. This time i went to Taiwan Yahoo knowledge and just mixed everything around. pretty easy, i didnt even use a measuring cup. I also found a 蔥油餅 recipe on wikipedia. Hahahaha. Almost everything i learn, it really comes from wikipedia.

蔥油餅
INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup water (hot water for chewy pancakes, cold water for crispy pancakes)
  • Green Onions/Spring onions/Scallions, chopped
  • Peanut oil, Corn oil, or Lard
  • Salt
DIRECTIONS:
  1. Mix two parts flour (2 cups) with one part water (1 cup).
  2. Knead until dough is smooth.Let it rest for 10 minutes
  3. Seperate dough into individual balls. Take one piece and flatten it out into a round pancake.
  4. Smear the preferred form of grease onto the flattened dough. This could be corn oil, peanut oil, or lard. (Olive oil and butter are not typically used).
  5. Sprinkle chopped scallions and salt onto the flattened dough.
  6. Roll up the flattened dough into the shape of a snake.
  7. Reshape the "snake" into a coil. The dough should now resemble an unbaked cinnamon roll.
  8. Flatten up the coil into a pancake wil a rolling pin.
  9. Pan-fry the pancake with oil. Both sides of the pancake should be golden brown.
  10. Place the fried pancake on a plate covered with a paper towel to cool the pancake and to drain the grease.

REMEMBER to 打個蛋!!我們打了3個.... :D

3 個蛋 => cholesterol => Low density Lipoproteins LDL => to the blood => build up in artery walls => atherosclerosis => thrombosis => hypertension => myocardial infarction.

*clap clap clap* not bad, not bad.
I did not 混 as much as i thought i did. heeeeeeeeeeee. XD
